Question by Anonymous Anonymous: Why is it illogical to argue that marijuana should be legal because alcohol is more harmful, yet legal?
Is it not reasonable to expect the legal substances to be safer than the illegal ones? Preventing potential harm to oneself/others is the basis for outlawing substances in the first place, right?

Please only answer my question, no ramblings on the topic in general.

Answer by tomusiaka
You should not assume that a substance is less harmful just because it’s legal. There are many legal drugs in pharmacy that are much more harmful to you than marijuana and some other drugs that are illegal. Also, glues and other chemicals that can make you high are legal but they are very harmful to your body.

People who want to make marijuana legal have other reasons, too. For example, there are couple countries where legalizing drugs made people use them less and safer, or that if someone wants to hurt himself, he will do it any other way using any other substance that is legal or just will buy an illegal drug from a drug dealer that potentially could be even more harmful because it is not regulated by the law.

People who don’t want to make marijuana legal believe that making it legal would make a lot of people use it and hurt themselves and others. Hurting others would include families (father got addicted and is not supporting his own family), other drivers (driving when “on high” can be life threatening), other poeple (accidental) and government’s budget (more accidents would mean more filled up hospitals and drug addicts usually can’t afford to pay their medical bills because they spend all their money on drugs).

There are other valid arguments on both sides though but the one you gave is actually not a valid one.

Answer by Moonlit Pharoah
It’s not an illogical argument, but now no one wants to address the issue because the government would have to admit it made a “mistake”, to put it in the most benign of terms. The most honest would be that the politicians which are majorly funded by the pharmaceutical industry wants you to buy their drug (whether it be more harmful or not.) Also keeping marijuana illegal is big business when it comes to arresting otherwise law-abiding citizens (cops, lawyers, more prisons). This is prohibition just as it was with alcohol, only in this case they have conveniently grouped marijuana with much more destructive drugs so they can further penalize citizens and take away even more freedoms in the guise of protecting america from the scourge of drugs. They have even used their propaganda to try and group those who buy drugs with those who support terrorism. The only thing that is fueling drug related crime and lining the pockets of the worst criminals is the continued prohibition of marijuana.

Question by EastBay925: Is it possible to be “addicted” to drugs in general, and not one specific substance?
First of all I’m 19, (A college student with a 3.7 GPA not a bum) & my whole life I’ve had what is in psycological terms a “Sensation Seeking Personality”, or a “Novelty Seeking Personality.” I enjoy adventure (I’ve traveled to 4 countries, including many unsafe zones where other travelers were terrified to go) and almost always value an experience rather than being able to focus on long term goals. I also have ADHD so I get bored easily, and need stimulation to be able to relax the mind and focus on college work.I’ve also had a difficult childhood with anxiety/depression in the past. Now that you know my background here is my situation.

I’ve never been addicted to any actual specific substance, but I am constantly seeking stimulation to improve my performance (tired of teachers saying I’m a troublemaker & parents losing hope in me despite effort), starting with overloading on caffiene daily for years now. When I tried Marijuana, it was like a miracle, I could finally relax for hours at a time doing homework instead of being overly active in this “office job” society. Tabacco relaxes me temporarily. I used to take ecstasy in early high school at school and whenever i did my teachers would congratulate my good behavior and quality work (it was actually raising my dopamine to a regular level). Cocaine (only done 3 times) stimulates me for an intense 30 minute study session (what would take me hours to do sober). Meth could help me stay on task for days and people would think its a change of heart for the best, but unfortunately it’s not. Keep in mind when sober (my whole life till 18 years old with a handful of exceptions) I am unproductive (in academic terms) and can be extremely impulsive and even aggressive.

I work part time and get checks of 100-190 every 2 weeks and I find that most if it goes for weed 4x a week, maybe a bottle of rum on a Friday, and etc. I also buy food but I never have any cash leftover.

Is this predictable of future addiction problems?

Question by Popcorn: How to work with drug addicts?
I thought of working with drug addicts today, like how would I get to that position? What sort of jobs are available in rehab centers and drug treatment centers? What type of degrees would I need to get?

Best answer:

Answer by ThirtyEightSnub
Education Requirements for a job as a substance abuse counselor depend on the hiring agency. Some counselors have a high school diploma and
certification while others have a bachelor’s degree or
master’s degree. Since some of the best substance
abuse counselors are those who have overcome addiction themselves, this is one of the few jobs
where a degree from the school of hard knocks can
outweigh university schooling. Counselors with more
education will be trusted with less immediate
supervision and licensed counselors can provide
one-on-one counseling.

Answer by Mike
Yes i also agree that most of the counselers are people who overcame their addiction. Who better to give you the experience, the procedure, the decision making consultation etc…. i knw someone here “getcleantoday program” they have a consultation line if you want to for another option maybe call tge hotline 1-888-453-2862 and get some professional answers to evaluate things further. Hope that tip helps a little.
