Question by Bridget♥: How can i stop getting addictions?
90% of my family members are either
a. a drug addict
b. an alcoholic
c. or have an addictive personality
I have an addictive personality and im trying to live a toxic-free life. Im having a lot of trouble.
I have gotten addicted to: marijuana, alcohol, pills, ecstasy, and cocaine.
Getting “un-addicted” to something is a long and difficult process. I am so SICK of going through it over and over.
I love life, and i don’t want to live it under the influence of an addiction. I’m tired of spending all my money, and im tired of fighting with my loved ones. No matter how hard I try, I end up depending on some sort of toxic substance to feed this strange and unexplainable urge.
How can I stop leaching to every activity that seems to take me away from life, even though I have a wonderful life ??

Counseling
Answer by Tanvi
seek counselling. If at all possible, move away from your family, or those specific members who are addicted. They’ll have a bad influence unless they can stop for good. Move into a slightly more upmarket area – if you can.
Try to keep yourself busy with new stuff so you don’t fall into using drugs/drinks as a coping mechanism.

Technically, you are correct, since they are addicted to nicotine. But since smoking is legal, most people do not think of themselves as “drug addicts,” which is usually reserved those who are abusing illegal drugs, or who are addicted to legal drugs, such as narcotics and other painkillers, available via prescription.

-Pretty much… The SAME thing goes for People who Drink “too regularly”- Also. 🙁 People tend to think that if a Substance is accepted as “Legal”- that They can’t be “Addicted” to it. But ANYthing that can alter Ones Behavior- IS a “Drug…” And if you can’t stop Yourself from “Using” it, you ARE “Addicted” !! 😮

Question by trish m: “Recovery” Just looking for others opinions on “drug addiction”?
how many of you believe that 12 step programs work? and how many of you know someone who has given up everything that matters for their drug of choice? Just sincere answers please…
You have pointed out one of the main things that needs to be there “willingness” good job!
I’m an addict in recovery (5yrs) and I know each person is different. some just quit, others use AA/NA, and then some need a combo of the AA and therapy… One thing that all addicts lack is the ability to cope with life on life’s terms. If an addict doesn’t learn to cope then they tend to just switch addictions… from drugs to others i.e. eating, gambleing, workaholic, thank you guys for your answers and I’ll give this question till the end of the day..

I had gotten into drugs and alcohol for a while, and I’m only 15. The fact is I didn’t want to stop, no matter who said what I just didn’t. So I found out the hard way, that you cannot quite unless you really [[100%]] want to. It took someone special leaving me for me to quite. But I have alot of friends into drugs and they give up alot for drugs… I haven’t seen any of the therapy things working for them, because they didn’t want to quit. Hope that answers your question, just my opinion.
Answer by lotus4yoga
Well, I don’t like the AA thing about “I’m powerless.” Plus they seem sort of cult-like. Most people quit drugs on their own when they’ve just had enough of it. But they never show up in statistics cause nobody knows – they don’t go to a hospital or AA or anything – they just quit. (My husband was a heroin addict for years before I knew him and then he was in a methadone program but he quit on his own. No NA or anything. I mean, he went to therapy for over a year but he’s really healthy now. Seriously healthy.)
Your last detail with the coping ability is absolutely the answer. Any addiction to anything came from not looking honestly, openly, at life because you’re scared or you want things to be different from what they actually are. You just don’t feel good enough the way you are. Some people come to the realization that they are good enough, that things are just as they are supposed to be, through therapy or some people have these really dramatic “quantum changes.” I’ve heard it described as feeling something physically pulling on you or like a bolt of lightning – and suddenly you’re different.
