Opiate Addiction

Opiate addiction is one that has been a problem among drug addicts for some time and continues to be used pretty heavily. Common opiates are heroin, Oxycontin, Dermerol and Vicodin. Oxycontin, Dermerol and vicodin are painkillers that are prescribed by physicians. Lately, both those individuals who legitimately require use of them and those that do not, have been using them in growing numbers. Some individuals with real injuries who are prescribed the drugs become physically dependent on them and then addicted. Other individuals, that have never been prescribed them, take them solely for getting high. Either way, persons who become addicted find themselves in trouble and in need of serous help.

Opiate addiction is just as serious and dangerous as any other, including to street drugs. Persons who become addicted to these types of drugs will develop cravings and may not be able to function as normal. This might mean that they are unable to work, take care of themselves or their family. They may also have physical symptoms when they are unable to obtain the drugs.

Those who are addicted to opiates will find that drug rehabilitation will often be necessary to get clean. Some individuals are able to quit cold turnkey. However, this isn’t typically common. While some people are able to stop using opiates, many will either continue to use drugs all of their lives or finally get help. It is important for those addicted to opiates have hope and believe that they can get off of drugs. Millions of people have done it and chances are millions more will as well. When looking for a good drug rehab program, there are a few things that you should look for. We will discuss a few of them below.

Does a particular rehab have a detox program?: Detoxification support may be necessary to help some individuals get clean. This should be medically supervised by either a doctor or a nurse. It also may or may not include the use of drugs, though often times it will.

Does a particular rehab program offer methadone or buprenorphine?. Methadone and buprenorphine has been used for quite some time to treat Opiate addiction. It generally replaces their opiate use and is the amount given to the addict is tapered off over time.

Does a particular rehab have a good success rate?: While no rehab will be able to get 100% of the addicts that come to them clean, they should have some success. Most people understand that the very nature of addiction makes it hard to measure success rates because those addicted to drugs often stop and start numerous times before they are able to finally get off of drugs. However, it is important that the particular drug rehab facility that you choose has a reputation of making a positive contribution to their patients’ lives.
