Question by Shea Vargas: Are there people who are “programmed” to be depressed?
I’ve had depression for four years and nothing has helped it. Therapy, medication, talking, nothing helps and it’s getting worse. I’m getting addicted to drugs I’ve only tried once and it’s hard for me to get off them. What’s wrong with me…?

Depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain, that you are usually born with, so yes, it’s kind of like being “programmed” to be depressed. However medication should help. Just keep trying different ones until you find one (or a combination of a few) that works for you.
And if you have a history of addiction in your family, then you’re more likely to become addicted yourself. Perhaps you should go to a drug counselor, or Narcotics Anonymous meetings and get a sponsor. They can help a lot.
I hope everything works out for you, and remember, if you get too depressed, there’s always hotlines you can call, or you can just call 911.

The Life Process Program©, offered exclusively at ALPP Institute, was developed in 1991 by pioneering psychologist Dr. Stanton Peele. Dr. Peele was one of the first researchers to identify and develop a non-disease model for addiction recovery. The Life Process Program© has been continually enhanced with the latest in techniques based on the most current scientific research.

The Life Process Program© offers an alternative to 12-step drug rehab and alcoholism treatment programs. Unlike traditional drug and alcohol rehab centers, you now have a choice for permanent recovery from drug or and alcohol abuse.

“The Life Process Program© shows you how to touch base with your values and inventory your resources and assets – the positive things you come with…. This is accomplished through behavior modification training, life-skills exercises and Cognitive Behavior Training (CBT) – all of which I have written exclusively for the ALPP Institute. That is why I believe that the Life Process Program© is the most advanced addiction-prevention program now available in the U.S.”

Question by Hello Cow How Are You?: What is the good of anti-depression drugs?
Do you ever wonder why an anti-depression drug may cause thoughts of suicide?

Well, I think it’s because these poor people are going to be forced to take these drugs for the rest of their lives!

Why don’t doctors try to come up with something that works more long term to permanently restore the chemical imbalance?

Best answer:

Answer by Rofl boxxy :3
just ask yourself wheres the money in it??

if all depression was permanantly cured there would be no more income

Answer by ariella
the problem is, chemical imbalances change over time, and people habituate to medication and the efficacy wears off over time. that’s definitely a big contributing factor to why there is no ‘big fix’. each neuron responsible for the creation and uptake of neurotransmitters would have to be affected properly to get the right balance. certain doses of meds for one person work perfectly, whereas someone else: they barely work, or have the worst possible effect imagineable.
it’s even harder because, in a lot of ways, neurobiologists don’t even know WHY these chemical components work to affect depression. so the cause of depression isn’t even entirely known. we know WHAT chemicals *can* be involved in it. but that’s about it. it’s a very difficult disease to pinpoint.
