Question by : Can the uninsured and unemployed go to alcohol rehab too?
Ok, I am 20 years old now and I am no longer in denial of being an alcoholic. I realize it now. My life is so messed up and I want to change before things get even worse. The only problem is that now I am jobless again due to my alcoholism and I am close to broke. Do rehabs accept people with no insurance or a job even? Thank you…..

Dear One, Congratulations on your epiphany!!! You will have a great life being sober. I know of only one place to go and that is Salvation Army. They help you in every way possible. Be open, willing and honest, and all will be given to you. I am so proud of you! Take good care.

Answer by Nigam
You know my name, I am an alcoholic. I have been sober for over 9 years. When I was in Chicago, what happened to you, happened to me. I went to the South Suburban Center for Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. They did not require money or for me to be employed.Their only requirement, in a manner of speaking, was that I had admitted to myself that I was an alcoholic, that my goal was to become sober, and then remain sober. It was a very good rehabilitation center. Now, the U.S. is a huge country. I don’t know where you live. I am sure you can find a rehabilitation center which understands your difficulties. The way to go about finding this out is:
1. Contact Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) on their toll free number.
2. If you are willing to, go to AA meetings.
3. Please do not think that I am even remotely suggesting that you are “crazy”, but the local or community mental health centers can be sometimes a big help.
4. If you cannot travel anywhere for lack of funds, do ask yourself this question: “Can I become sober without going to a rehabilitation center?” My answer would be:”Yes, you most certainly can.” It is good to be with people who have the same problem as we do, but is not a requirement. That is of course my opinion.
5. Last suggestion, go to the website: www.about.com, choose Alcoholism, go to chat rooms. They are decent people. You will not feel uncomfortable chatting with them, asking questions and so on.
You already taken the first step according to AA, which is admitting. You have courage. You WILL make it. Take it one day at a time. If you are a believer, God bless you, if not ignore me.
The reason I am doing this is because in atleast some ways I owe my sobriety to some exceptional people from AA. I always remember that, as a result I would like to help anyone who asks for help, even though I am some 10,000 miles away from you, in India.

Question by jesswzmn: what is the fundamental group personality flaw of liberals which leads to them losing out to Republicans ?
on issues like healthcare reform.

Best answer:

Answer by [email protected]
I was really surprised to hear this from top-level Republicans: we significantly outclass the Liberals in one area that compensates for our smaller numbers: organization.

You might think that’s funny, but it’s quite true. Republicans are way more organized and diligent. Year after year, Democrats are astonished when they lose elections, and it all came down to dogged determination, coupled with far superior organization.

Liberals excel at getting their supporters enthused, but their creativity is no match for the “slow and steady wins the race” approach the Republicans use.

It’s like playing poker. You always have some smug hotshot (Liberal) who arrogantly believes he can just bluff his way to victory. Opposing him is the Conservative who has studied all the statistics and hence knows exactly when to bet, when to raise, and when to fold.

The hotshot may win some flashy hands, but the conscientious player will always prevail.

Answer by David
I think its a values thing. We are a center right country still, and probably will be for a while. Conservatives have an advantage because they often represent the status quo: the way things are. Liberals are far more progressive, and quicker to jump on the bandwagon so to speak in terms of new programs and policies. That weariness that Republicans have of the unknown (this is one of the key aspects of conservatism). Liberals have to be far more speculative, while Republicans can point towards what is happening now. Liberals tend to look at the “positive outlook”, while Conservatives tend to look at the “negative outlook”, and that negative outlook is more safer. If The People are feeling ballsy about a particular issue, they are willing to take a risk (and be liberal in that sense).

Obama’s campaign was successfuly largely because the status quo was not approvable to the majority of Americans. His rhetoric of change was something that more and more people were willing to accept was important, because our status quo at the time was not favorable. But if things don’t change quick enough, people are quick to assume that it’s not going to work, and so revert back to the “safety” of the status quo. This is why the Republicans have an edge much of the time.

Honestly, I think it is the blend of our two parties, the switch from one to another, that is what makes our country succesful. In times of change, Democrats can make us progressive, in times of stability, Republicans can keep us going. The Democrats keep us progressive, but the Republicans keep us in check, to make sure we don’t get ahead of ourselves. And since it is the people who elect these folks, we are in control of which direction our country goes. No system is perfect, but America has never been in a situation that we weren’t able to overcome sooner or later and I believe that will always be the case.

Question by Lily_1981: How difficult is it to quit drug and cure drug addiction problem?
My brother had drug problem for at least 10+ years. He used the heavy stuff like cocaine and other stuff I don’t even know of.
The doctor gave him medication to clean his system, and he has been sober for 2 years.
Is it possible for somebody to cure their heavy drug addiction problem in short 2 years? What’s the odd that my brother’s problem is cured?

Best answer:

Answer by Mina
If he has genuinely been sober for two years, than I would say that it’s possible. My mom used to be a heavy heroin user and she has been sober for upwards of 18 years with no relapses.

It of course depends on the willpower of the person in question, but if he has the right coping skills and is determined not to go back to it then he can be “cured” of his addiction. I put cured in quotation marks because there have been recent studies that show that there’s a genetic predisposition to becoming an addict. Likely he’ll always run the risk of relapsing, but if he can stay away from situations that put him into contact with the drugs and have the willpower not to do them if he is in those situations, I’d say your brother would be okay.

Answer by desemonaapsyche
There is no cure for a drug addiction. He might be off it…but it’s something he is going to actively have to do for the rest of his life. If he even does it once ever again he’ll be an addict. I really hope he sticks to it. Two years is good though, you should be proud of him. 🙂
